Ma Barker
Bloody Mama
George and Arrie Barker were struggling to make ends meet; it was hard, they had five growing boys to feed and George could not hold a job. “George, you need to stop yer drinkin’” Arrie announced as she slapped the bottle of bootleg whiskey from his hand. “These boys need shoes and you haven’t worked in three weeks”, “I’m trying Arrie, there ain’t no work out there, times are bad” he tried to make his argument but Arrie cut him off. “The neighbor boys have shoes George, their daddy must be workin’”, “I’ll go and see if the old man down the road needs help on his farm”, “You do that, and don’t come back unless you got a job”, Arrie yelled as George slammed the door behind him.
George and Arrie had five boys, the depression was making life difficult for everyone in Tulsa Oklahoma but George had it worse. He was drunk all of the time, he couldn’t hold on to a job for more than a few weeks. He left that day but he never made it to the old man’s farm; he left town for good, he was done listening to Arrie and her nasty mouth. That is what he told himself; the fact was he left his wife and five boys in a crisis, without him no money was coming in at all.
After several weeks, Arrie knew George was gone for good; she had to find a way to support her boys. Before Arrie married George, she was a petty thief. She didn’t have any skills for working, she didn’t have anything worth selling, the only thing she had was her experience in crime. Arrie was distraught; night after night, she sat thinking; trying to come up with a way to take care of her family. Then one afternoon, her eldest boys Herman and Lloyd rushed in the house with an answer to the problem.
“Ma, me and Lloyd got you a nice watch”, Herman said holding up a shiny gold watch. “Where did you get that Herman?” she said in a concerned voice. Lloyd chimed in, “We got it from the jewelry store, we smashed the window and took it for ya” he said with a proud grin. “The alarms went off and the cops chased us, but we are the fastest, we got away easy”, Herman said in a victorious voice. “Alarms?” “Don’t you boys know nothin’?” She scolded Herman for setting off the alarms, “You don’t just smash windows, set off alarms and run; you case the place first” she commanded. The boys listened and said they would be more careful; and the Barker gang was born.
Their friend Frank joined Herman and Lloyd and together they terrorized the small shops and business owners in Tulsa City. They were a little older now but they were not any wiser; Ma did what she could to keep them out of jail. It was getting harder and harder for her to protect them; they were careless and eventually Herman and Frank were caught red handed in a hold up.
